In July 2012, Pure's closest clean water source was 5 miles away. The main chore for most children was to haul water using a jerry can. When full, a five gallon jerry weighs over 40 lbs. Children spent hours each day ferrying water to support their families, hours that should have been spent in school.
The founders of Pure Joy Foundation funded a clean water well that was drilled by Water Harvest International in March 2013 at the new Pure Primary School. Information and photos about the well can be found here.

WHI drilling a borehole for a village in South Sudan. WHI drills deep through the bedrock to ensure the well will continue to provide clean water even during the dry season. A Water Committee is established which is composed of respected men of the community. They provide the labor required for the drilling and are taught how to maintain the pump so that it will last for decades.
